Council Tax anomaly

Post by jonboy » Thu Mar 26, 2020 3:51 pm

We have a flat rented out in Lowestoft but the tenant moved out on 28th Feb . I have found another tenant but he cant move in due to the covid 19 lock down problems of organising things ...bank...estate agency for the contracts ...van hire etc . I have just had to pay the council tax for the period 28th Feb until 28th March minus 2 weeks empty property discount . However i have just contacted the council regarding the 25 % single person discount for the coming months ( maybe ) but was told i must pay the full rate as no discount is available ( apart from the 2 weeks ) for empty properties .
The Anomaly.....if the flat has no one living in it then NO council services are being used but i pay 100% tax .....if 1 person is living there then they are using council services but paying 25 % less
Further more , if i was to move in to the rental property then i would get 25 % discount AND my wife would get 25 % discount on our own house .
Ahh well... such is life .

What a crazy system, jonboy! Sounds like you will have to rent the property out to yourself (or your wife) for £0 a month and register for council tax as a single occupant. There's nothing in law that says the occupant would have to physically live in the property - they could go and 'stay' with their 'girlfriend'/'boyfriend' for a month or whatever 'on holiday' :D ;)
