The only explanation is that the pot is sufficiently far enough onto the deck for it not to reflect in the water and be viewed from the position from which you took your picture. The edge of the boat interferes with the straight line to the water's surface to where the pot would be reflected up to your line of vision from the water's surface. If the canal was wider you would then be stood further away from the boat and, depending on the 'new' width of the canal there might then be a line of reflection to you. I hope that makes sense.
