From the International Space Station - today.

Post by boatbuilder » Wed Oct 10, 2018 8:15 pm

I just happened to look at the ISS tracker late this afternoon at about 16:30 and the International Space Station was moving across the North Atlantic towards the UK. I then went onto the live stream on the ESA website and as it approached and travelled over the UK I took the following seven screenshots between 16:42 and 16:49. As most of the country was cloud free, and the camera was switched a few times in those seven minutes it gave some interesting results.
Here they are in the order taken. They are all 1920 x 1080 resolution so can be viewed larger than here.

1. Ireland at the bottom of the picture with Great Britain beyond. Time: 16:42:52
Image

2. Great Britain. Time: 16:43:28
Image

3. The east coast of England with the Netherlands beyond. Time: 16:44:15
Image

4. Camera switched to looking down. South is to the top of the picture with Anglesey and the North Wales coast towards the top right, with Liverpool Bay/Irish Sea and Isle of Man just right of centre. Time: 16:45:04
Image

5. The east coast runs top to bottom towards the left of the picture with Flamborough Head at the centre. Time: 16:45:15
Image

6. Having passed over the UK the camera switched - looking back towards the UK showing the English Channel and North Sea at the bottom of the picture. Time: 16:47:54
Image

7. Taken further east from the previous image, the Netherland's coast is now in the picture. Time: 16:48:21

These next three images are of the African Coastline and South Africa as the ISS travelled in a south-easterly direction.
The first one shows the coastline of North-west Africa from Western Sahara through Mauritania to Dakar in Senegal.
The second is of the coastline of Angola and Namibia in South-west Africa, and the third is of South Africa.
The fourth image shows the path and the approximate locations of the ISS when the second and third images were taken.

Three images taken a short while ago of the sunrise over the Caribbean as the ISS travels in a south-easterly direction (top to bottom). The first two images show the very long shadows cast by the tall cloud formations with the sun being so low to the southeast.
The third image taken a couple of minutes later shows the west side of the island of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Cuba is just about visible to the north west of Haiti.

I have created some Bulletin Board Code (BBCode) to enable the embedding of videos from other websites, where those sites permit and supply the appropriate code. I will post a topic in the relevant forum to explain how you can use the code which is now available in the main 'Post Reply' box.

I have decided to start this off using the live stream from the ISS which is from where I have posted the images in this topic.

The stream is currently available 'live' 24/7 but at times might be off-line when there is no signal being received at the receiving stations on earth. Other times the screen may just be black and this is when the ISS is in the earth's shadow, which is for about 45 minutes in every 90 which is about the total time it takes to orbit the earth.

The video can be viewed full-screen and the resolution can be changed up to 720p or set to 'Auto' using the icons at the foot of the video.

I was following a live broadcast on NASA TV this morning of their new attempt to send up a docking capsule to the ISS now that the Space Shuttle is no longer in use. This was a test mission using an unmanned capsule and it successfully docked with the ISS shortly before 11-am GMT.

I took a number of screenshots at various stages of the docking process using my iPad and now have created a stand-alone webpage on another domain of mine where they can be viewed as a slideshow HERE
