Buoy-laying vessel - 'Galatea' in Lowestoft 11th December 2019.

Saw this ship the Rotra Vente anchored off Kessingland today. It is a container ship that has been modified to carry large 'awkward' cargo; it's whole bow lifts up and the cargo is loaded through the bow. At the moment it is on it's way to Gt Yarmouth with turbines for the wind farms.

Seeing that ship, reminded me of a program I watched recently on, I think, the National Geographic channel. (Then again, it might have been a reshowing of the program referred to below, which is from 2012). The entire ship partly submerges until the centre platform part is fully submerged so that a complete rig can be floated over it before it rises up again to facilitate its transportation.

About ten days ago I decided to treat myself to another compact camera as the Sony one I have had for nearly five years, whilst I have always been and still am happy with it and will continue to use it, is lacking in optical zoom power (at about 3x max) so have always been unable to get some of the shots I would have liked to. I therefore decided on a Canon Powershot SX740-HS, which has 40x optical and up to 160x digital zoom, although I doubt I would need to go that far with a zoom unless it was for a specific reason. Like the Sony, it also has 4K video capabilities, but doesn't have the facility for slow-motion which the Sony has. However, it can take time-lapse movies which the Sony can't. So swings and roundabouts, I suppose.

Some of the images I have posted on the forum in the past week or so were taken with the new Canon, but I haven't been able to put it to the test outdoors properly until today. As I had to go out to ASDA and being a nice day I decided to take the camera with me and test it out alongside Lake Lothing. I am very pleased with the results so far and here are some of them and in the next couple of posts.

There were two Border Force vessels in port - 'Protector' and 'Searcher'. Images are un-cropped but resized to 1920 x 1440 pixels.

All images in these posts were taken hand-held, but resting on the rail on the quayside.
