Latest post of the previous page:

“Oh no! Not my camera!”

Having just read a post about a mishap with a camera - are you prepared to reveal anything similar that happened to you?

On my last visit to “Africa Alive” - walking along, I put my Panny FZ200 in my camera bag (I use the term loosely!) - heard a “bump” sound - glanced down- and there was the camera - on the ground! Fortunately, the ground was compacted soil/stones - rather than something much harder! And the only apparent damage was minor dent on the outer casing of the lens. I can only assume that when I placed the camera in the bag (without looking), I actually placed it on the top of the bag - and, naturally, the camera slid off! As the song says “When will they ever learn?”

If you're scared of insects, look away from these magnified images which make creepy crawlies look like dinosaurs

Photographer Kutub Uddin took the images with a standard camera, using extreme close-up lenses and filters

Canon develops 250 megapixel camera sensor

Electronics company Canon has developed a 250 megapixel sensor for use in digital cameras. Canon said the sensor is sensitive enough to read lettering on the side of an aircraft 18km (11.1 miles) away.
However, it added, the gadget was unlikely to find its way into domestic cameras or smartphones. Instead, the ultra-high-resolution sensor could find a role in surveillance systems or other specialised applications.

Wex Photography finally rung me this afternoon after my enquiry some weeks back to tell me that they had received a Nikon COOLPIX P900 Digital Camera for me to look at(another bridge camera),my initial reaction was this has a much larger lens protruding than I had expected and that was before I began operating it. I also found it difficult and slow to get the Macro to focus.
It certainly is a handsome looking camera, however I decided it wasn't for me due to the size and weight, I thought if I am to carry a bulky camera about I might as well have a camera with interchangeable lenses,so if I do decide to ditch my Nikon 500 it will be back to camera body and various lenses thus returning to how I first started photography several years ago.

Largest astronomical photo ever with 46 billion pixels features Milky Way galaxy goodness
Well, a new photo has already beaten NASA’s Andromeda photo — and it came from South America. The new record holder is a ‘gargantuous’ image with 46 billion pixels across — and it is already trending in the science world. It’s now the biggest astronomical picture of all time, and it shows the Milky Way Galaxy in 194 gigabyte file size.
To get an idea how chunky this photo is, your iPhone 6S (even with 128GB storage) cannot save or view it. The insanely big photo was built out of 268 individual views captured in intervals for several days over the course of five years. Astronomers at Ruhr-Universität Bochum used the data to monitor our galaxy, and find stars with variable brightness.

Have you ever wanted to censor out (Pixelate or blur) part of an image? There are such options available in some software such as Photoshop. However, for those who haven't got any suitable software there is a quick on-line option available for free at the link below. All you have to do is drag an image from its folder on your computer onto the webpage as indicated and wait for a short while (maybe several seconds) for your image to appear on the webpage. There are various options available to either pixelate or blur any part of an image in various levels of pixelation or blurring. This can also be repeated on any number of parts of the same image before saving it back to your computer. Here is an example on the registration of an image of an illegally parked car. Note that when it is saved back to your computer the image is saved into your downloads folder so your original image is unaffected in the folder from where you dragged it.

I find it better to always use the manual setting where you select the area you want to censor, as you would when cropping an image. However, before selecting the area you need to choose the type and level of censoring you want from the settings on the page as it carries out the censoring as soon as you release the mouse button after making the selection.

BB - thanks for that - a facility that isn't in my Corel program. Had a little experiment - to blur out number plate - which it did. And it also blurred out the faces of people nearby! Excellent!

I think there should be a blurred TV channel. I'm fed up with half the news items being blurred or purposely out of focus. They could put all those on the blurred channel. I can't see the point of blurring out number plates when they are on the front and back of the car for all to see anyway?

Yes, the people in the vicinity of the cars can see them but they are few compared with people watching on the TV and if those people are responsible for something that could make them the subject for a targeted attack then it is a security issue. It only takes one person - the wrong person - to catch the plate number on TV.

Just for information - the total number of images now on the forum which have been posted as uploads has, in the past 24 hours, exceeded 6,000 using a total of 1.03 Gigabyte of memory.

In the image below, the 2.67 attachments per day represents the average since the board commenced which we know was only used intermittently between 2010 and the end of 2013.

I remember in my early days of selling computer systems, when the hard drive of an AT went from 20Mb to 40Mb. We just couldn't understand how anybody could fill that amount of space.
