Some Really Old Photographs.
About 25 years ago, my mother-in-law’s brother (my wife’s uncle) who was about 80 at the time told me he wanted me to have the photograph albums which had been handed down to him by his father as he knew that with my interest in photography I would continue to look after them.
I have looked through these albums, about 10 in all, many times over the past 20 years since they came into my possession and which in total hold many hundreds of prints and admired the quality of many of the pictures, wondering also about the cameras which took them.
As many of the pictures are able to be taken out of the albums, I decided to have a go at scanning some of them to see how they would appear enlarged and thought I would post a few of them here. I believe some of the pictures in the albums go back to the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. With the few images I have posted below, I have made some notes from either small details that appear in the albums alongside the pictures or from what I have been able to establish myself.
I scanned them all using a minimum of 1200 dpi for quality purposes but then had to re-size them downwards to make them a suitable size to post on here. The three I have posted are of varying qualities and each can be viewed larger by clicking on them. I hope they are of interest.
1. This first one is probably one of the best quality ones, of which there are many and the print size is about 4” x 3”. I have no idea when it was taken or who the people are but I would imagine it is early 20th Century. 2. This one is of Aberystwyth in Wales and shows a number of bathing machines which I understand from a little research mostly disappeared from use in the UK about 100 years ago, so this was most likely prior to then. The print size is about 3” x 2”. 3. I know this was taken in Didsbury, Manchester but don’t know the date. However, it was probably the 1920’s or 1930’s. Maybe identifying the model of car might help, but which I haven’t tried to do. This is one of the poorer quality pictures and the print size is about 2” x 1.5”.

As far as I can determine the car is an A C Royal roadster from 1924
This was done via the wheel hubs wheels being of solid type (not spokes) and the shape of the running board.

Glad you like the pics Meg. When I have the time I will scan some more. There are some really good ones with some interesting fashions of the day.
That certainly looks the same model car Nikkai and the year fits with the time my wife's grandfather had the house it's parked outside of.

Re: Some Really Old Photographs.
Great photos BB and Nikkai, like yourselves I like to browse old photo albums of which we have many being left to us by our late Mum ( my Mother in Law - a fantastic lady). I have posted some in the past and will have a look through the albums again this week to see what I can find of which most relate to Lowestoft and the surrounding area.
In the meantime here are some photos.

Re: Some Really Old Photographs.
This group photo (poor quality - as this image is taken from a “contact print” from a quarter-plate glass negative) is a family group. The photo was possibly taken in the late 1890s/early 1900s - judging by the young ladies’ clothing. I like the “collar and tie look” the young ladies are wearing - and “large” hair styles!
Thoughts on the photo:
The lady on front row - right, might be a widow as she’s dressed in black.
In the centre, further back is what could be a wheelchair.

How do you know it is black Trigger? Do you have the colour version? Looks crimson or dark blue to me ;-)

A Lowestoft era long gone. The Ladies. I wonder if you can recognize where the photos were taken?

Some people are gifted with insight. But, of course, if you’re still viewing the world through your rose-coloured spectacles . . the colour of things will look different.

Re: Some Really Old Photographs.
SB. The top one of your images doesn't display because it is a .tif file. I will see if that format can be added to the settings.
Watch this space!!!!
edit: I have just checked the settings and .tif is shown as an accepted format so I don't know why it won't display. Maybe the file is corrupt. Can you try re-saving the image on your computer in the jpeg format. You may be able to do that by opening it in 'Paint' and then 'Save As' and see if you can change the format to .jpeg or .jpg in the drop-down below the file name.
I have now done it for you, SB. Gosh! I'm good to you.
