What we've listened to!
Last night in bed I was listening, with earphones, to a CD of Vera Lynn songs I have on which she sings a song called 'Travelling Home'. I have always thought that particular track had very similar (the same?) music as a song I leant at primary school about 60 years ago that I remembered as 'Westering Home'. I decided to investigate and did a search on Google and came up with the song I learnt as a child being sung by a duo called 'The Corries' (no nothing to do with 'The Street'). This was available on YouTube and when I listened to it I was amazed how I had remembered the words almost perfectly after all these years. Here is a link to it, and it certainly is the same tune as the Vera Lynn song.
I then found a number of the duo's albums on Amazon and listened to the 30-second snippets of the tracks that were available on one of them. One of the tracks - less than a minute long - was called 'Abigail' which was highly amusing. I had a good (quiet) laugh at about 2-am this morning so as not to disturb my wife. Tonight I also found it on YouTube so thought I would also post it here. (And I've bought the album 'Traditions' with 'Auto-rip' for £3.99) I wonder why we never learnt 'Abigail' in primary school?

Ah, yes - some of the things we sang at school: Westering Home / The Road to the Isles / An Eriskay Love lilt / What shall we do with a drunken salior? / London’s Burning (sung as a round) / The Lass of Richmond Hill / All Through the Night / The Ash Grove / Golden Slumbers / Barbara Allen / The Wraggle, Taggle Gypsies / Blow the Man Down . . .

We used to sing lots of sea shanties. All that part of our tradition is virtually lost now. Funny how we used to be able to find time for that and still get good results.

A song I particularly like - and one that we did sing at school, is the lovely American song: “Oh, Shenandoah”. A favourite recording (CD & DVD) I have of this is by Bryn Terfel. The video of it is on youtube - during the intro, there’s a short tune played on, I think, on the Cumbrian pipes (they have a rather wistful sound), and it's repeated towards the end.

Re: What we've listened to!
I remember when I was in my early teens we (my sister and I) used to listen to Brian Matthew's radio program 'Saturday Club'. It has now been reported that he is to step down from his current BBC radio program 'Sounds of the 60's', at the age of 88 owing to ill-health. One thing I will always remember is his very recognisable voice.

Re: What we've listened to!
We are regular listeners to 'Sounds of the 60's', a very enjoyable two hours on a Saturday morning listening to some great music and the voice of Brian Matthews as he passed on his knowledge of the singers and groups of that era. He will be missed but Tim Rice who has been standing in for him these last few weeks has been doing a good job.boatbuilder wrote: It has now been reported that he is to step down from his current BBC radio program 'Sounds of the 60's', at the age of 88 owing to ill-health.

We listen to it most Saturdays but I felt Tim Rice was reciting rather than having an actual interest.

Re: What we've listened to!
Having seen Benny Andersson on BBC Breakfast on Thursday morning, where this album was previewed, I enjoyed listening to the CD earlier, which I have just added to my collection. A number of the tracks are of ABBA songs.

This has got to be the best ever rendition since Sam Cooke
Beautiful father and son voices perfect together and the lyrics are still so relevant today

Re: What we've listened to!
I'm currently listening to the new album that was released recently of Roy Orbison with the backing music by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and my wife just asked me when was it he had died? I told her 'a while ago' but didn't know exactly when so searched 'Roy Orbison' on my default search engine (bing) and got this panel (image below) on the right of the screen which states that he "Lived: 23 Apr 1936 - 15 Sep 1968 (age 32)", which I knew was incorrect and from the remaining links on the page determined that he died on December 6th 1988. I could understand an error if the year had been incorrect - 68 instead of 88 ...... but for there to be a totally different date and age as well ????
Incidentally, the album is good. See my Suffolk Pictures at https://suffolk-world.com

Re: What we've listened to!
I'm currently listening to an album of music from 1976 - track currently playing is 'Dancing Queen' Abba.
However, it's a vinyl album from a ten-record collection I have of music from 1970 to 1979 which I bought in the '80's and is being played on the equipment below which I saw in Aldi tonight when I went shopping and decided to buy it. I do have a record deck but that needs to be connected up to a separate amplification system which I don't really have these days. This unit is self-contained and comes with all the necessary leads and software to connect it to my computer so I can convert them to .mp3 tracks. It also operates on a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery that runs for four hours on a full charge. Not bad for £39.99 including a 3-year warranty - and the sound is pretty good too!

Re: What we've listened to!
This seems to be my favourite song at the moment. It's not a recent one but I came across it for the first time recently on a playlist on 'Spotify'.
Sången fäder dig tillbaka by Agnetha Fältskog. Translates as A Song That Brings You Back, the English words are on the video.
It's from an album from her pre-Abba days entitled När en vacker tanke blir en sång [When a Beautiful Thought Becomes a Song] (1971).
