December 24th. Police hunting a gunman who killed a woman at a pub in Merseyside on Christmas Eve have appealed for help over the "callous shooting". Four other people were injured but police do not believe the 26-year-old victim, who was celebrating with her sister and friends, was targeted.

December 25th: Two penguins have been visiting Tewkesbury Community Hospital to cheer up patients. It is an annual tradition to have an animal visit - last year it was alpacas that went around the ward.

December 26th. A minibus has hit a landmine in Burkina Faso in West Africa, killing at least 10 people, officials say. Five others were wounded in the blast, which occurred in the east, near the border with Niger, on Christmas Day. The governor of the Fada N'Gourma region said the death toll could rise as some passengers were still missing. Burkina Faso and its neighbours have faced jihadist insurgencies since 2013. The crisis has killed thousands of people and displaced more than 2m.

December 28th. At least 14 people have been killed and 24 others injured after a vehicle ploughed into crowds watching bikers at a popular carnival in Nigeria's southern port city of Calabar.

December 30th. A court in military-run Myanmar has sentenced Aung San Suu Kyi to seven years in prison for corruption, a source familiar with the case told CNN, bringing an end to a string of secretive and highly-politicized proceedings against the ousted former leader.
