January 2nd. One of the biggest peacetime evacuations in Australian history is under way as devastating bushfires threaten a 250km stretch of the south-east coastline.
Catastrophic conditions which fanned blazes on the New South Wales south coast and in eastern Victoria on Wednesday will return on Saturday as the mercury hits 46C.

January 4th. Sir Rod Stewart has been charged with battery after an alleged scuffle at the entrance to a private New Year’s Eve party for children at a hotel in Palm Beach, Florida.
The altercation is also believed to have involved Stewart’s 39-year-old son, Sean, who is accused of pushing a security guard.

January 5th. In the early hours of the morning, a car crashes into a group of German tourists in Luttach, Italy, killing six people and injuring 11 others. The driver was reportedly drunk and is charged with murder.

January 6th. An $80million bounty has been placed on Donald Trump's head in Iran in the wake of General Qasem Soleimani's assassination.
During the televised funeral, an unidentified eulogist speaking on official state television said one US dollar should be tabled for every Iranian in the country, with the cash going to whoever killed the US President.

January 8th. Iran has launched what it promised would be a 'crushing revenge' strike against the US over the death of General Soleimani - but succeeded only in damaging two airbases in neighbouring Iraq.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired 22 ballistic missiles at the Ain al-Asad airbase in western Iraq and Erbil International airport in the north in the early hours of Wednesday but failed to kill a single US or Iraqi solider.

January 10th. Evidence suggests an Iranian missile brought down a Ukrainian passenger plane that crashed near Tehran, possibly in error, Western leaders say.
Canada and the UK called for a full and thorough investigation into the crash, which killed all 176 people on board.
Iran's civil aviation chief, however, said he was "certain" that the plane was not hit by a missile.

January 11th. The British ambassador to Iran, Robert Macaire, is arrested during anti-government protests, after attending a vigil and then, according to BBC, getting his hair cut. According to Tasnim News Agency he was arrested "on suspicion of organising, provoking and directing radical actions". U.K. Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab states the arrest is in "flagrant violation" of international law. More than an hour later, Macaire is released from custody.

January 12th. A volcano near the Philippine capital that draws many tourists for its picturesque setting belched steam, ash and rocks in a huge plume today, prompting thousands of residents to flee and officials to temporarily suspend flights.
Thousands of people were evacuated from the area near Taal volcano after it suddenly shot a column of ash and steam as high as nine miles into the sky. Lightning crackled inside the smoke and tremors shook the ground.

January 13th. A sinkhole swallows a bus and several pedestrians on a busy street in Xining, China, killing six people and leaving 16 others injured. According to state media, the sinkhole stretches nearly 10m (32 feet) in diameter.
