April 14th. Mark Sheehan, guitarist with Irish pop band the Script, has died in hospital aged 46 after a brief illness. Sheehan formed the band with frontman Danny O’Donoghue and drummer Glen Power in 2001.

April 15th : A former Indian politician convicted of kidnapping has been shot dead live on TV along with his brother. Atiq Ahmed, who was under police escort, was talking to reporters when a gun was pulled close to his head in Prayagraj, also known as Allahabad.

April 18th. The King's coronation procession will be led by a cross that includes religious relics gifted to the monarch by the Pope. Two shards of the True Cross – which is said to have been used in the crucifixion of Jesus Christ – were given to Charles by Pope Francis to mark his enthronement. The small fragments have been incorporated into the Cross of Wales, which will be seen by millions as it is carried into Westminster Abbey on May 6.

April 21st : Wreckage of the Imperial Japanese Navy ship SS Montevideo Maru, sunk during World War II, is found after 81 years in the South China Sea, off the coast of Luzon Island. The ship, which was carrying over 1,000 prisoners of war, including 850 Australian POWs, represented the largest loss of life for the Australian armed forces during the Second World War.

April 22nd. Australian entertainer Barry Humphries, best known for his comic character Dame Edna Everage, has died in Australia aged 89. The star had been in hospital in Sydney after suffering complications following hip surgery in March following a fall in February.

April 26th. A 45-year-old man who completed the London Marathon in less than three hours died suddenly while on his way home from the event. Stephen Shanks was one of thousands of runners to take part in the 26.2-mile race on Sunday (23 April), and managed to make it to the finish line in just two hours and 53 minutes.

April 28th. A British national has been killed in Ukraine and a second is missing, the UK Foreign Office has said. Sources in Ukraine told the BBC the dead man is Scott Sibley, who is understood to have been fighting for Ukrainian forces. He is the first British national confirmed to have been killed in the conflict and has been described as a "friend like no other".
