January 1st A magnitude 7.6 earthquake strikes the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, killing 55 people. A tsunami warning is issued for multiple prefectures along the Sea of Japan.

January 2nd. A Japan Airlines plane burst into flames after a collision with a smaller coastguard aircraft on the runway at Tokyo's Haneda airport. All 379 passengers and crew on board were evacuated, but five of the six crew on the coastguard plane died, police said. The captain was injured.

January 3rd At least eighty nine people are killed and 284 others injured in a double bombing in Kerman, Iran, during a ceremony marking the fourth anniversary of the assassination of Qasem Soleimani.

January 4th. Actor David Soul, best known for his role in the television series Starsky & Hutch, has died at the age of 80. His wife, Helen Snell, said he died on Thursday "after a valiant battle for life in the loving company of family".

January 5th An Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft loses a door section of its fuselage mid-air and makes an emergency landing in Portland, Oregon, United States, with no major injuries reported. The Federal Aviation Administration subsequently orders a temporary grounding of all 737 Max 9 aircraft in response to the incident.

January 6th. Hundreds of protesters in London have staged a sit-in on Westminster Bridge, calling for a ceasefire in Gaza in the first big demonstration of the year. Elsewhere on Saturday, there were protests in Belfast and Dublin. The London protesters blocked off the bridge and the surrounding roads after a march from St James’s Park in the centre of the city.

January 8th. A private moon mission that blasted into space on Monday appeared to be in jeopardy after suffering a “critical loss of propellant” and operators said they are considering alternatives for the mission.
After lift-off on Monday, the Peregrine Mission One (PM1) – which carries a piece of technology developed by UK scientists – experienced an “anomaly” that would have prevented the lander from achieving a stable position pointing towards the sun, according to Astrobotic, the US firm behind the project.

January 9th U.S. Navy and Royal Navy warships in the Red Sea shoot down 21 suicide drones and missiles launched by Houthi forces in Yemen. British Defence Secretary Grant Shapps describes it as the largest attack in the area by the Houthis to date.

January 10th. Addressing MPs during Prime Minister’s Questions, Rishi Sunak said he will introduce new legislation that will ensure that “those convicted as a result of the Horizon scandal are swiftly exonerated and compensated”
He also said his government will introduce a new upfront payment of £75,000 for the “GLO group of postmasters," a reference to 555 people who successfully challenged the Post Office in 2019.

January 11th A chartered Air Côte d'Ivoire flight from The Gambia to the Ivory Coast, transporting the Gambia national football team to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, makes an emergency landing in Banjul, Gambia, due to a loss of cabin pressure lasting for more than nine minutes. All passengers suffer some degree of hypoxia including loss of consciousness.

The United States carried out an additional strike against Yemen's Houthi forces on Friday, two officials told Reuters, after President Joe Biden's administration vowed to protect shipping in the Red Sea. The latest strike, which one of the U.S. officials said targeted a radar site, came a day after dozens of U.S. and British strikes on the group's facilities.
