FIFA Football World Cup 2018 (Russia)

Post by boatbuilder » Sat Jul 25, 2015 9:40 pm

The qualifying round draws were made earlier this evening in St. Petersburg and the two old rivals England and Scotland have been drawn together in the same qualifying group.

It doesn't seem five minutes since the last World Cup in Brazil in 2014 and today the qualifiers for the next one are starting.

I see Scotland's first match is in Malta and this is a picture I took of the Ta'Qali National Stadium in 2008, where their match will be played tonight.
It was taken from about a mile away from the walls of the ancient city of Mdina. As England are in the same group they will also play there later on in the qualifiers on September 1st 2017.

I am going to miss the match this evening and to tell the truth I am not really that bothered. At one time I would have been annoyed at having to miss a live international but after our dire performance in France earlier this year I have lost interest in our national team. I still wish them well and I hope they pull their socks up and perform better for the new manager...but I wouldn't put money on them doing it. Let us hope they prove me wrong :StGeorge:

With the competition 'proper' now just four days away, who do you think will win it this time around?

Below is a map taken from FIFA's website which shows all the teams taking part in the final stages which might help you decide, but I'm afraid there is no prize if you happen to choose the winner! soccer3 soccer3 soccer3

Not the best teams to get in a sweepstake Morty1753 ;) I am sticking to England to win it, my prediction in 1966 was right, so you never know!! :StGeorge:

How many more times since 1966 have you predicted them to win, Mel? :D

The first big surprise of the competition is Iceland holding Argentina to a 1-1 draw today. The second big surprise is the so-called 'great' Lionel Messi missing a penalty in that match - or maybe that should be the first surprise and the result the second.

I have watched five of the games so far and have been pleasantly surprised at the quality of football with Spain being the best team I have seen so far. Apart from the Hernández the French defender there doesn't seem to have been much play acting neither which is a plus...but I think that might change as the tournament progresses (me of little faith). Not to keen on VAR but I think that is going to stay but I am pleased with the latest goal line technology, I think that was definitely needed.

So, so far so good, let us hope England do us proud tomorrow :StGeorge:

England 2, Tunisia 1. Just the start we needed.

It was, as you say Morty, 'Just!'. With the winner in injury time. :D

Phew!! That was close. Wasn't that impressed with the refereeing, especially VAR, but England kept going to the end and certainly deserved the win :StGeorge:

I watched the Russia v Egypt game tonight and like last night's England game the referee seemed to turn a blind eye to several blatant fouls in the penalty area. I wonder if this is because they don't want to bother consulting the VAR system?
