This shows a small image of a painting by the Dutch maritime painter Hendrik van Minderhout which is part of a collection at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London and who have kindly given their permission for this to be displayed on our website.

You will note that the date of the battle is stated as 3rd June 1665 which differs from what may be stated elsewhere – 13th June 1665. During my research it became apparent that the ‘date of the day’ on which the battle took place was actually the 3rd of June as England was still using the Julian calendar at that time so the 3rd of June is the date that would have been recorded in this country at the time, hence my reason for using it. The 13th June was in fact the date according to the Gregorian calendar, where it was in use at the time. This calendar was not adopted in Britain until September 1752.
