‘The Battle of Lowestoft’ - 350th Anniversary

Post by boatbuilder » Mon Jun 01, 2015 12:15 am

This month sees the 350th Anniversary of ‘The Battle of Lowestoft’, which was the first fleet action of the second of four Anglo/Dutch wars of the 16th and 17th centuries, I therefore decided to commemorate this with an inclusion in the site’s logo/banner throughout June.

This shows a small image of a painting by the Dutch maritime painter Hendrik van Minderhout which is part of a collection at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London and who have kindly given their permission for this to be displayed on our website.

Some interesting information about the painting and a larger image can be seen on the Royal Museums Greenwich website, here:
http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/11775.html

You will note that the date of the battle is stated as 3rd June 1665 which differs from what may be stated elsewhere – 13th June 1665. During my research it became apparent that the ‘date of the day’ on which the battle took place was actually the 3rd of June as England was still using the Julian calendar at that time so the 3rd of June is the date that would have been recorded in this country at the time, hence my reason for using it. The 13th June was in fact the date according to the Gregorian calendar, where it was in use at the time. This calendar was not adopted in Britain until September 1752.

More information about the ‘Battle of Lowestoft’ – won by the English - can be read here:

edit - 4th July: I have included the image (below) which has now been removed from the main banner.

Wikipedia is saying the battle took place on the 13th of June not the 3rd Boatbuilder. But I have just noticed it is something to do with the changing of the calendar...Julian and Gregorian...why do they make things so complicated ;) :)

On July 3rd the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra have a concert at the Marina Theatre entitled "Celebration of the Sea" which is being billed as "350 years after the English Naval victory at the Battle of Lowestoft, join us as we celebrate all things nautical!" Some excellent music is listed.

Tickets are still available for anyone who is interested and can be booked online. I have mine. :D
