Mary & Charles Thurlow

Post by Dave » Mon Oct 17, 2016 6:19 pm

From my days as a member of Lowestoft Online I see some of the 'senior' Onliners have taken up residence here. I wonder if any of them can remember Mary and Charles Thurlow who lived at 139 St Peter's Street up until 1967? Mary passed away in '67 and Charles moved to 129 until he passed away in 1968. They married in 1928 in London, but I don't know when they moved into 139.

Mary's maiden name was Alger (any bells ringing yet?), she was born in 1896 and lived in Water Lane as a young girl with her family. Her father was James William Alger, a sailmaker and publican.

If anyone can remember anything I'd appreciate it. Not just Mel, Meryl, Boatbuilder, Trigger, funkychick, Sunny and all the other Onliners, but anyone with a long memory. Thank you.

I'm sorry I can't help you Dave as I've only been a 'local' for 26 years but some of the other members may be able to.

Hello again, boatbuilder. I had an uncle who married a Wakefield girl and he moved up there. Fifty years later people still knew he came from London by his accent, even though he sounded Yorkshire to me. Hang in there, only another twenty plus years to go and you won't be the new boy. ;)

Hello Mel, I've got a lot of catching up to do. I'll post a message in a more appropriate forum and see what's been going on.

It's 40 years since I left Liverpool, Dave, and arrived here by way of Gloucestershire and Cheshire but people still pick up my accent although it was never a strong 'Scouse' one.

Why don't you try ringing Lowestoft library they have an archive section and are usually very helpful

Thanks for the help, funkychick. Do you know what sort of information the archive contains? It could be a great help.

Well it's a long time since I used them but there were all the old street directories, censuses, business directories newspaper reports and more or less everything needed to follow through I did 90 % of my family history before it all went online
