My Lowestoft RSS Feeds to Windows Live Mail or Mozilla Thunderbird

Post by boatbuilder » Mon Feb 23, 2015 11:05 pm

If you use Windows Live Mail and you make use of the RSS News Feeds facility, you can receive feeds of all posts made on the My Lowestoft forum, even if you are not logged into the site. These will be displayed in a similar way that other feeds are displayed - such as those from the BBC News website.

If you wish to set it up then here is how to do it.

1. Go to your 'Feeds' window in Windows Live Mail by clicking on the small icon which will look like a smaller version of this: Image This can be found where the icons for the Mail, Calendar and Contacts are.

2. At the top left of the 'Feeds' window will be a similar icon. Click on that icon and a window will open up into which you type the URL as in the image below, and then click the 'OK' button.

NOTE: From November 2016 the URL above should now commence with the 'https' prefix not 'http'.

The result should be something like this with 'MyLowestoft.com' appearing somewhere under the 'Your feeds' heading and shows the number of unread feeds alongside.

The feeds will automatically update in accordance with the settings you have made for any other feeds you have or at the specific timescale you may have set for the feeds from this site. However, you will only receive the latest post in any specific topic at the time your feeds are updated. That means that if there have been three posts made in a topic since the previous update you will only receive a feed for the third one that was made.

The same URL is used for feeds in Mozilla Thunderbird but the set-up will be different than for Windows Live Mail.

For information - for some reason this does not now seem to work on Windows Live Mail. It stopped doing so a couple of days ago. The feeds setting on the site is OK as I have it linked to on an app on the iPhone and that works OK with the same address shown in the above post. Must be a problem somewhere in WLM causing it to not recognise it any more. I noticed that my computer did 48 updates a couple of days ago so maybe it was something to do with them. Maybe a future update will correct the issue.
