Broadband - do we want it cheap or good?

Post by Trigger » Tue Jul 19, 2016 7:22 pm

The MPs on the Culture, Media and Sport committee are clear - our UK broadband strategy is going down the wrong path and BT must shoulder much of the blame.
The focus of their report is on BT's Openreach division and its alleged failure to invest in fast fibre. But there are others with questions to answer - notably the government, the regulator, and the broadband users.
Because if, as the report says, "the UK is not adequately investing in critical telecoms infrastructure", and is "a laggard by international standards in providing fibre connectivity", that cannot be entirely BT's fault.

I think I speak for many when I say that we want it both cheap and good! :D
I am currently with SKY and I pay £30.00 per month for an up to 76mbps speed. I actually get 76mbps or even higher on some days.
It's a very fast connection but of course it's not that cheap, I would have thought that £20.00 would be a more acceptable monthly figure.

If there were faster speeds I would probably go for it and pay even more. I know that Virgin cable do faster speeds but of course the whole of Waveney does not have cable!

I don't think anybody would disagree with you on that score, Gary.

I am with BT and have the similar speed package as you with them and I pay £24.50 a month. I don't have any need for anything faster as streaming of films from Netflix or Amazon is fine and downloading on-demand programs in HD through the Sky box is almost instantaneous and I can start watching them within a few seconds from the start of the download. Of course I wouldn't say no to a further price reduction but I can't see it coming. :)

wouldn't mind getting what we pay for
we pay full whack for fibre broadband to the cabinet to bt who are handsomely paid by us taxpayers then we are then connected with this "superfast broadband" to the old copper wires to the house, also owned by BT, difference is that we have to suffer the old wire and old tortuous routes they take to get to our homes but still have to pay top price--this needs to be change to a pro rata cost to us
