Two dead amid California heavy rains and mudslides

At least two people are dead amid mudslides in Southern California, where heavy rains triggered flooding and massive run-off, US media report.
"Waist-deep" mudslides in areas scorched by wildfires last month shut down more than 30 miles (48km) of the main coastal highway, officials say.
Emergency crews are working to rescue multiple people trapped in vehicles and homes, a Santa Barbara official said.
At least eight people were injured and thousands have fled ahead of the rain.
Heavy rain run-off caused waist-deep mudflow in the Montecito, where some homes were knocked from their foundations, Santa Barbara County Fire Department spokesman Mike Eliason told the Los Angeles Times newspaper.
Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Kelly Huber told the newspaper two people were found dead on Tuesday in Montecito and may have been killed as result of the storm.

Wife walks free after killing husband

A former councillor who killed her sick husband of 50 years because she believed he wanted her to help him die has walked free from court.
Susanne Wilson smothered Henry, 70, with a cushion at their home in Ayr, South Ayrshire.
But at the High Court in Glasgow Lady Rae admonished Mrs Wilson, 73, due to "exceptional circumstances."
At the time the retired nurse was struggling to come to terms with sex abuse allegations against her husband.
Mr Wilson was housebound and suffered from chronic heart disease at the time of his death in September 2016.

Lady Rae told Mrs Wilson: "This was a very tragic case.
"There are exceptional circumstances and punishment would not be in the interests of justice.
"The main reason was your mental health at the time of the death of your husband.
"There is no reason to suggest that you are any risk whatsoever to the public."
The judge admonished Mrs Wilson and added: "I hope you get on with the rest of your life."
The court heard she killed her husband shortly after he spoke to one of his accusers.

Body found in Stockport garden after woman's confession

A body has been found in a garden after a woman walked into a police station and told officers she killed and buried a man "a number of years ago".
Greater Manchester Police said the woman made the "disclosure" at Cheadle Heath police station on Sunday.
On Tuesday, the force said a body, believed to be that of a man, had been found in a garden in Matlock Road, Reddish, near Stockport.
A 63-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
A police spokesman said the man's family had been informed and was being supported by specially trained officers.
He said it was "still very early days in our investigation" and thanked the public "so far for their support".
Door-to-door inquiries have been conducted on Matlock Road, with residents being asked if they know a man called Kenneth Coombes.
The questionnaire suggests Mr Coombes was in his late 80s in 2005.
Det Insp Dan Clegg said officers discovered remains which were later confirmed to be human by a forensic pathologist.
"We will continue our work at the scene through the night and hope in the coming days we can piece together the exact circumstances surrounding the man's death."

Tsunami alert for Honduras after 7.6-magnitude earthquake in Caribbean

An earthquake of magnitude 7.6 that struck in the Caribbean sea on Tuesday was felt across northern Central America, briefly prompting a tsunami warning for disaster-hit Puerto Rico and the British and US Virgin Islands.
The US Tsunami Center later cancelled the alert but warned some parts of Honduras and Belize were still at risk from waves of up to a metre.
The quake – which hit at 10.52pm local time – rattled windows in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa roughly 323 miles (519km) to the east and was felt at least as far north as the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, but no damage was immediately reported.

Open Banking 'revolution' to challenge banks' dominance

A fundamental change to the way people can bank, manage and spend their money in the digital world is under way.
A change in the law and the start of the Open Banking system means people can allow businesses, other than their bank, to access their financial data.
Organisers say this has the potential for consumers to get better deals, such as cheaper overdrafts, and to speed up the switching process.
But warnings over fraud risks have already been issued.
As part of the same legislation, surcharges for payments made by credit card, debit card, or other payment systems such as PayPal will be banned.
Traditionally, banks have held all our information about our past transactions and spending habits.
A change in UK law now means that banks and building societies must allow regulated businesses access to a customer's financial data, but only if the customer has given their permission.
The bank can only block access if it suspects fraud or unauthorised access.
The UK's Open Banking system should ensure that such access is given by the UK's nine biggest current account providers in a secure way, and without the need for customers to reveal their online banking login details or passwords.

Further to ‘Open Banking’: saw this info. in the article in the Mail’s online edition:

Who will be affected? Only customers with online banking accounts. They will have to give their permission every time a company wants to access their data.

Customers who sign up to 'open banking' revolution where they share details in the hope of better deals 'could be put at risk from fraudsters'
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... z5455I4RVU

I bank online – and don’t want any company contacting me and asking for my permission to access my bank account! They must think we’re all stupid! I seem to recall banks warning us NOT to give out our bank account information to anyone! I might be in the Bank at 9am on Monday! :D

A plane has skidded off the runway at Trazbon Airport, ending up with its nose nearly in the sea.
No passengers or crew were hurt in the incident, which may have been caused by a bird strike, reports say.
Pegasus Airlines said that the Boeing 737-800 aircraft, flying from Ankara to Trabzon, "had a runway excursion incident".

Liam Neeson says harassment allegations are now 'a witch-hunt'.

Liam Neeson has described the wave of sexual misconduct allegations that have swept the entertainment industry as “a bit of a witch-hunt” and appeared to dismiss breast groping as “childhood stuff” in an interview on Irish television.
Speaking on The Late Late Show on RTE, the Hollywood A-lister said “there’s some people, famous people, being suddenly accused of touching some girl’s knee, or something, and suddenly they’re being dropped from their program, or something”.

Lord Lucan's late wife cut children out of will and left entire fortune to homeless charity

Lord Lucan's late wife cut children out of will and left entire fortune to homeless charity

The wife of notorious fugitive Lord Lucan cut her children out of her will and left her entire fortune to a homeless charity, her daughter reportedly said.

The 80-year-old aristocrat, who was found dead at her Westminster home in September last year, donated her estate to Shelter, which supports those dealing with homelessness or housing issues.

Formally named Veronica, Dowager Countess of Lucan, Lady Lucan severed ties with her family in the 1980s and continued to decline contact with them until her death.

Shackled children found in Perris, California home

Two parents have been arrested in California after police found 13 people allegedly being held captive at their home, including some "shackled to their beds with chains and padlocks".
David Allen Turpin, 57, and Louise Anna Turpin, 49, were held on charges of torture and child endangerment.
The 13 people - aged between two and 29 - were found in a house in Perris, 59 miles (95km) south-east of Los Angeles, police say.
They are all believed to be siblings.
Officers were alerted by one of the victims, who on Sunday managed to escape and call the emergency number "from a cellular device she found inside the house", the Riverside Sheriff's Department said in a statement.
The girl - who police said appeared to be "only 10 years old and slightly emaciated" - claimed that 12 of her siblings were being held captive by their parents.
Police officers later found "several children shackled to their beds with chains and padlocks in dark and foul-smelling surroundings".
But the parents were unable to immediately provide a logical reason why their children were restrained in that manner, the police said.
The officers were "shocked" to discover that seven of those held in the house were actually adults aged between 18 and 29.
"The victims appeared to be malnourished and very dirty," the police said.

BBC star Emily Maitlis' harasser sentenced

A former friend of Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis, who has harassed the BBC journalist for more than 20 years, has been jailed.
Edward Vines, 47, inflicted "psychological torture" on the BBC star by repeatedly breaching a restraining order, a court heard.
Vines wrote letters to Ms Maitlis while serving a sentence for previous breaches of the order.
He was given a 45-month sentence at Oxford Crown Court.
Ms Maitlis first met Vines, of Clarkes Row, Oxford, when they were students at Cambridge University.
He was first convicted of harassment in 2002.
He was issued with an indefinite restraining order in 2009, which he was convicted of twice breaching last year.
As well as contacting her while in prison for those offences, Vines wrote again while living in a bail hostel and subject of licence conditions.
Judge Peter Ross described this as "wholly unsatisfactory" and gave the probation service and the governor at HMP Bullingdon 10 days for a written explanation.
In a statement read to the court, Ms Maitlis said she had felt "scared and let down" after she heard Vines had breached the restraining order "even from within the prison system".
She said it had affected her relationship with her husband, and scared her children, "who thought the threats had gone away...while he was behind bars".

Company fined for making 75m nuisance calls in four months

A claims handling company that bombarded consumers with 75m nuisance phone calls in four months has been fined £350,000 by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
Miss-sold Products UK made the automated calls promoting its payment protection insurance claims service without the recipients’ consent, which is against the law, the ICO said.
It said the company also failed to identify itself in the calls, and used “added value” numbers which generate revenue when an individual returns a missed call.
The ICO received 146 complaints from the public about Miss-sold Products. Some people were called on multiple occasions, others said they were unable to opt out of receiving the calls.
Some were distressed that calls late at night could have been from family or those to whom they provided care.
The director of Miss-sold Products – which had moved its registered office from Milford Haven in Wales to Darlington, County Durham – had applied to strike the company off the Companies House register. The ICO blocked the move to allow options to be considered for recovery of the fine, and for full scrutiny the director’s actions.
ICO enforcement group manager Andy Curry said: “This company blatantly ignored the laws on telephone marketing, making a huge volume of intrusive calls over a short period of time and without any apparent attempt to ensure they had the consent of the people they were harassing.
“The ICO will come down hard on rogue operators who want to treat the law and the UK public with contempt.”
Earlier this month it emerged that British consumers received 2.2bn nuisance phone calls and texts from pensions, PPI and cash-for-crash claims firms in 2017, according to an analysis of Ofcom data.
The ICO has called on the government to bring forward plans to introduce personal liability for directors as a matter of urgency.

Could nuisance callers lead to the death of the landline? Two thirds of Britons admit ignoring their home phone to avoid scammers

They used to be considered as essential in virtually every British home. But landline telephones are in danger of being relegated to museum pieces, thanks to the rise of nuisance callers.
Nearly two thirds of Britons now ignore their landlines in order to avoid cold calls and scammers.
Millions of people let their calls go to voicemail so that they can screen who it is that is trying to contact them. But others ignore the calls altogether.
The findings – in a new TalkTalk report – come amid growing evidence that cold calls in the UK have reached epidemic proportions.
Earlier this month, it emerged that Britons were bombarded with 2.2million nuisance phone calls and texts about PPI, pensions and insurance scams last year.
Nearly 900million of those calls and texts came from ambulance-chasing firms trying to get people to claim compensation for accidents, an analysis of Ofcom data found.
