Four young men killed in London new year stabbings

Four young men have been stabbed to death in unrelated attacks in the space of 15 hours in London, Scotland Yard said.
The killings – three on New Year’s Eve and a fourth in the early hours of New Year’s Day – happened in north, east and south London and none were being treated as linked, the Metropolitan police said.
The first recorded attack was at 11.30am on 31 December when an 18-year-old man was stabbed in Enfield. He died in hospital that evening.
At about 7.30pm, a 20-year-old man was fatally stabbed in West Ham, and at around 10.40pm a 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death in Tulse Hill.
The fourth stabbing happened at around 2.30am on 1 January, when a 20-year-old man was attacked in Old Street, east London. A second male, aged in his 20s, was taken to hospital with critical stab injuries.
Commander Neil Jerome, of the Met’s territorial policing command, said: “It is heartbreaking that, at a time when so many of us are contemplating what lies ahead in 2018, four families are dealing with the grief of losing a loved one to senseless violence and the callous use of knives as lethal weapons.”

Woburn Safari Park fire: Thirteen monkeys killed

Thirteen monkeys have died in a fire in an enclosure at Woburn Safari Park.
The park's owners said the Patas monkey house within the African Forest drive-through enclosure caught fire in the early hours.
"Devastatingly", the park said, none of the animals could be saved despite the efforts of staff and fire crews.
An investigation into the cause of the blaze has begun. The attraction, in Bedfordshire, will remain open to the public.
In a statement, the park said all the other animals in the jungle drive-through enclosure were being monitored, but early signs suggested they had not been affected.

Manchester Arena attack: 'Hero' admits theft from victims

A homeless man who stole a purse and a phone from victims of the Manchester Arena attack has admitted theft.
Chris Parker, 33, was initially dubbed a hero after claiming he comforted a seriously injured girl.
CCTV footage played to Manchester Crown Court showed him wandering between stricken victims.
He kept returning to injured Pauline Healey, whose granddaughter lay dying nearby, before leaning over her and taking her handbag to steal her purse.
The footage showed paramedics and police trying to resuscitate victims close by as he did so.
Within hours of taking the purse, he was using Mrs Healey's bank card at a local fast food

Major flaw in millions of Intel chips revealed

A serious flaw in the design of Intel's chips will require Microsoft, Linux and Apple to update operating systems for computers around the world.
Intel has not yet released the details of the vulnerability, but it is believed to affect chips in millions of computers from the last decade.
The UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) said it was aware of the issue and that patches were being produced.
Some experts said a software fix could slow down computers.
"We are aware of reports about a potential flaw affecting some computer processors. At this stage there is no evidence of any malicious exploitation and patches are being produced for the major platforms," the NCSC said in a statement.
"The NCSC advises that all organisations and home users continue to protect their systems from threats by installing patches as soon as they become available."
The bug could allow malicious programs to read the contents of the so-called kernel memory of computers, which can include passwords and login keys.

Pilots grounded after 'midair fight' on London-Mumbai flight

An Indian airline has grounded two pilots over allegations that they had a fight and briefly stormed out of the cockpit during a New Year’s Day flight from London to Mumbai.
Jet Airways is investigating claims that a male pilot slapped his female colleague during an argument while the plane was in the air with 324 passengers onboard.
Reports in several Indian newspapers, quoting unnamed sources, said the midair altercation led the female pilot to leave the cockpit in tears and she had to be persuaded to go back in by cabin crew.
At one point, the male pilot also left the cockpit, leaving the controls briefly unattended, the Times of India claimed.
“A misunderstanding occurred between the cockpit crew ... However, the same was quickly resolved amicably and the flight … continued its journey to Mumbai, landing safely,” Jet said.
“The airline has reported the incident to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and the concerned crew have been de-rostered pending an internal investigation that has since been initiated.”

Essex woman dies after waiting nearly four hours for ambulance

An 81-year-old woman was found dead in her house after waiting almost four hours for an ambulance.
The pensioner, who lived in Clacton, Essex, called 999 on Tuesday complaining of chest pains, according to the GMB union. East of England (EEAST) ambulance service said a crew arrived three hours and 45 minutes after the initial call.
Dave Powell, GMB regional officer, said the crew had to force their way into the property on arrival because the control room could not contact the woman by phone, and found her dead.
“They’re devastated because they’re not in the job to find people dead, they’re in the job to help people and keep them alive,” said Powell.
“It puts enormous strain and stress on people who are working really hard as it is.
“Three hours and 45 minutes is totally unacceptable for an elderly woman on her own with chest pains.
“Something has got to be done and the government has got to wake up to this crisis.”
He said such cases were likely to be more widespread than the public was aware of.

Gender pay gap: More than 500 firms reveal their figures

Ladbrokes, Easyjet and Virgin Money are among the major companies to reveal gender pay gaps of more than 15% in favour of men for mean hourly pay.
Organisations with 250 or more workers must publish their figures by April and so far 527 firms have done so.
Women's hourly pay rates are 52% lower than men's at Easyjet. On average, women earn 15% less per hour at Ladbrokes and 33% less at Virgin Money.
All three firms say men and women are paid equally when in the same role.
At Easyjet, for example, 6% of its UK pilots are women - a role which pays £92,400 a year on average - whereas 69% of lower-paid cabin crew are women, with an average annual salary of £24,800.
The carrier said it had set a target that one in five of new entrant pilots should be female by 2020.
The Ladbrokes Coral group put its gender pay gap largely down to "weak representation at our senior levels" and Virgin Money said it was "confident" men and women were paid equally for the same jobs.
The gender pay gap is distinct from equal pay, which is the difference in pay between a man and a woman who carry out the same or similar jobs.
In 2016, the UK gender pay gap was 9.4% for full-time workers, or 18.1% for all staff.
Employers of about half of the UK's workforce will be affected by the reporting rules, which reveal discrepancies in pay and bonuses, with the results published on a government database.
Companies have been publishing figures ad hoc ahead of the 6 April cut-off, including the BBC, which revealed women's mean hourly rate was 10.7% lower.
The firm to publish the biggest gender pay gap so far is women's fashion chain Phase Eight - with a 64.8% lower mean hourly rate for female staff.
Phase Eight's chief executive Benjamin Barnett said the figure did not reflect the "true story" of the business, since most male employees worked in head office roles rather than in shops.
As of last April, 39 of Phase Eight's 44 male employees worked in the corporate head office - where pay tends to be higher - which Mr Barnett said was likely to be the case at other women's fashion retailers.

'Unforgivable': Judge slams parents of five-month-old baby as he jails them for leaving the boy with a fractured arm for THREE days after a GP told them to take him to A&E

A couple who left a five-month-old baby in agony with a fractured arm for three days without taking him to hospital have been jailed for four months each.
Mother Gemma Warne and her partner at the time, Lee Chambers, admitted that they did not take the baby to accident and emergency when instructed to do so immediately by their GP on August 14, 2015.
Grimsby Crown Court heard the pair left it until three days later - when they noticed his arm was 'hanging'.
Their actions were branded 'unforgivable' by a judge, who jailed them both for four months.

Mill Hill shop worker fighting for life after attack

A shop worker is on life support after being "violently attacked" after refusing to serve three teenagers.
Police say two shop employees were assaulted after they "rightly refused to sell items to youths they believed to be under age".
One of the men, 49, is on life support in hospital, while his colleague suffered minor injuries.
The attack happened on The Broadway, Mill Hill, at 23:45 GMT on Saturday.
Police are appealing for help to trace the suspects, described as three black males, all believed to be youths.
They ran away from the scene shortly after the attack, police said.
DI Ian Lott from the Metropolitan Police's homicide and major crime command said: "We understand that a number of people came to [the 49-year-old's] aid and helped to put him in the recovery position.
"Were you there? Did you see the suspects running away? Some witnesses may have video footage during or after the attack and we would urge them to get in touch with investigators."
A police spokeswoman said the nature of the items the teenagers were attempting to buy could not be revealed at this stage.

Donald Trump to undergo medical check amid swirl of allegations over his health

Donald Trump will attempt to end speculation about his mental and physical suitability for the presidency next week by undergoing a formal health check.
The US president is to be examined by the same doctor as his predecessor Barack Obama and a summary of the results will be made public.
The physical test will last around two hours and include blood and urine tests, heart checks and even questions about his sleeping habits and sex life, according to medical experts.
It will be carried out at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on the edge of Washington DC, the country’s largest military hospital, on Friday.
By undergoing his first formal medical check since entering the White House, Mr Trump hopes to put to bed allegations about his mental state that emerged this week.

Staples Corner fire: London paint factory blaze sends fireballs into air

A “significant fire” at a paint factory has sent smoke billowing across London with witnesses reporting “fireballs” shooting into the air.
The London fire brigade said 97 firefighters and 15 fire engines tackled the blaze which completely destroyed a paint factory on Waterloo Road, Staples Corner, on Monday.
Achal Dhillon who lives in Hendon, less than half a mile from the scene, said the fire was burning “quite violently” for more than 30 minutes and fireballs were propelled into the air up to a height of 100 metres.
Dhillon said there was a “loud pop … then we saw a lot of flames suddenly rise up by themselves... then just this huge mountain of fire, almost pyramid shaped and spiralling as it was shooting fireballs into the air. There is a huge trail of thick black smoke”. He said firefighters arrived within a couple of minutes.

Two dead amid California heavy rains and mudslides

At least two people are dead amid mudslides in Southern California, where heavy rains triggered flooding and massive run-off, US media report.
"Waist-deep" mudslides in areas scorched by wildfires last month shut down more than 30 miles (48km) of the main coastal highway, officials say.
Emergency crews are working to rescue multiple people trapped in vehicles and homes, a Santa Barbara official said.
At least eight people were injured and thousands have fled ahead of the rain.
Heavy rain run-off caused waist-deep mudflow in the Montecito, where some homes were knocked from their foundations, Santa Barbara County Fire Department spokesman Mike Eliason told the Los Angeles Times newspaper.
Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Kelly Huber told the newspaper two people were found dead on Tuesday in Montecito and may have been killed as result of the storm.
