Cocaine worth £50m found hidden in 15 suitcases on private jet from Colombia at Farnborough Airport

Five men have been arrested after half a tonne of cocaine worth more than £50 million was discovered in a private jet.
In what is believed to be one of the largest recent seizures of its kind, Border Force officers found around 500kg of the Class A drug.
They found the haul after searching an aircraft that flew into the UK from Bogota in Colombia on Monday.
Two Britons, two Spaniards and an Italian were arrested on suspicion of importing Class A drugs after the twin-engined jet landed at Farnborough Airport in Hampshire.
The Border Force said that the drug was hidden in 15 suitcases that were found on board.
Border Force Deputy Chief Operating Officer Mike Stepney said: "After meeting the flight and questioning those on board, officers became suspicious and searched the aircraft and their luggage.
"When opened, each case was found to contain between 34 to 37 tape wrapped packages weighing approximately one kilo each.
"One of these was pierced and a white powder exposed which tested positive for cocaine."

Police Tasered Bristol man with mental age of seven

A disabled man was Tasered by police and charged with assaulting an officer in a case that collapsed when his mother discovered CCTV of the incident.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said the footage showed "rather different" events to those claimed by Avon and Somerset Police.
The police watchdog said failure to gather the CCTV "fell below standard" but there was no wrongdoing.
It also recommended further disability awareness training for officers.
The police force said the incident had been subject to a "detailed and robust investigation" by the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) and there was no case to answer for misconduct.

Motorists should be penalised for going just 1mph over the speed limit, Britain’s road policing chief says

Motorists should be penalised for going just 1mph over the speed limit, Britain’s road policing chief has said as he called for the 10 per cent buffer zon Chief Constable Anthony Bangham also said speed awareness courses were being overused, and believes offenders should get fines and points on their licence instead.
The warning from the roads policing lead for the National Police Chiefs' Council is significant because many chief constables will take their lead from him.
The West Mercia chief’s speech comes after recent figures showed a rise in road deaths, but motoring chiefs warned it may divert drivers’ attention from the road to their speedometers.
He declared “enough is enough” at the Police Federation roads policing conference, according to the Daily Mail, as he argued that police had lost sight of their duty and that speeding drivers were no longer afraid enough of being caught.

M&S plans to close up to 14 stores

Marks and Spencer is planning to close 14 stores and cut hundreds of jobs.
Six shops will close by April, including Birkenhead, Bournemouth and Durham. Staff have been offered jobs in nearby stores.
The closure of another eight shops has been proposed, which will affect 468 staff.
It follows a disappointing Christmas period for M&S, when sales of both food and clothing fell.
"Stores will always be an integral part of our customer experience, alongside M&S.com, but we have to ensure we have the right offer in the right locations," said Sacha Berendji, the retail operations director.
The six stores to close in April are Birkenhead, Bournemouth, Durham, Fforestfach in Swansea, Putney and Redditch.
The eight stores earmarked for closure are: Andover, Basildon, Bridlington, Denton outlet store, Falmouth, Fareham, Keighley and Stockport.
There will be a period of consultation over those shops.
Mr Berendji said M&S would "endeavour" to offer all staff affected an alternative job but added that "in some cases we may have to consider redundancy".

Darren Osborne guilty of Finsbury Park mosque murder

A man who drove a van into a crowd of Muslims near a London mosque has been found guilty of murder.
Darren Osborne, 48, ploughed into people in Finsbury Park in June 2017, killing Makram Ali, 51, and injuring nine others.
Osborne, from Cardiff, was also found guilty of attempted murder and is due to be sentenced on Friday.
Prosecutors said they were "clear throughout that this was a terrorist attack".
The jury took an hour to return the verdict at Woolwich Crown Court after an eight day trial.
Sue Hemming, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: "Darren Osborne planned and carried out this attack because of his hatred of Muslims.
"He must now face the consequences of his actions."
Jurors heard the area had been busy with worshippers attending Ramadan prayers on 19 June.
The Muslim Council of Britain welcomed the verdict, but added: "We cannot be complacent and regard this as a one-off terrorist incident."

Two shot after girl, 12, opens fire at Los Angeles school

Two teenage students have been shot at a Los Angeles school, and police say that a 12-year-old girl is in custody and her weapon has been seized.
The gunfire broke out at 08:55 local time (16:55 GMT) at Salvador Castro Middle School in the Westlake District.
A 15-year-old boy who was shot in the head is in "critical but stable" condition, and a girl, 15, was shot in the wrist, officials say.
Three others, aged 11 to 30, suffered minor injuries, police say.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) confirmed to the BBC the female is 12 years old.
A spokesman for the LAPD tells BBC Los Angeles correspondent James Cook that police do not believe this is an ongoing threat, but added that police are still searching the area to check for any additional victims or weapons.
The school will remain on lockdown for the remainder of the day, officials added.

France helicopter crash: Five killed as two army aircraft collide

Two army helicopters have collided in southern France, killing at least five people, police and officials say.
The crash happened at Carcès lake, just north of St Tropez.
Rescuers are at the scene, in the Var region, searching for a sixth person who was aboard one of the helicopters.
It is not clear what caused the crash. Both Gazelle helicopters belonged to a military flying school called Ealat, officials said. It trains pilots for the army and other military services.
The Ealat website says the flying school at Cannet des Maures has 82 aircraft and trains French, German and Spanish helicopter pilots.
The Gazelle has been in service with the French military since the 1970s and is used by the French forces in Mali, in their anti-terror mission.
A French army Gazelle crashed into a power line at Caylus in 2003, killing four people.
A similar crash near Draguignan in 1994 killed three people, broadcaster France Info says.

Boots' parent company 'charged NHS £1500 for £2 pot of moisturiser'

The NHS is being drastically overcharged for custom-made drugs, with the owner of high street chain Boots accused of being one of the main offenders.
According to The Times, Boots billed the NHS £1,579 for a single 500ml tub of cream in 2016 – despite the mixture being prescribed for as little as £1.73 elsewhere in the country.
The specially made moisturiser was bought by the high street pharmacy from BCM Specials, which was owned by Boots’ parent company Walgreens Boots Alliance.
Known as ‘specials’ these drugs are custom-made for patients and their costs aren’t regulated, meaning suppliers can set their own prices.
This is one of thousands of cases in which the NHS seems to have been overcharged for specials. Other examples listed by The Times include £1,323 paid for a 400ml ointment bought for just £1.90 a month later and £650 for bespoke coconut oil worth £1.
Deirdre Buckley, chairwoman of the specials working group at the British Association of Dermatologists, said that manufacturers overcharging in this way was “not right”.
NHS England said: “If companies harm patients and taxpayers by unfairly and inappropriately hiking drug prices they should expect vigorous regulatory and legal enforcement action. All pharmacies should seek to secure best value in preparing specials for patients.”

Wightlink ferry deck officer praised for sea rescue

A ferry company said it was "proud" of one of its deck officers who jumped off a vessel to save a drowning man.
The man was spotted in the freezing waters of Portsmouth Harbour from a Wightlink ferry late on Saturday.
Steve Chamberlain said he acted "instinctively" when he saw the man was in trouble.
Operations director Daryl Palmer said: "We are very proud of Steve and his colleagues for acting so promptly."
The ferry, St Clare, was at its berth at the Gunwharf car ferry terminal, preparing to sail at midnight to Fishbourne on the Isle of Wight.
The crew on the car deck saw a man in the water and at first threw a life ring in his direction.
Mr Chamberlain, who previously served in the Royal Navy, said: "I just acted instinctively when we saw the man wasn't able to get into the life ring.
"We carry out emergency drills all the time but it's different when it's happening for real.
"Getting the man to safety was teamwork and I'm grateful to my fellow crew members for their support."
Mr Chamberlain recovered the man from the harbour, who was conscious but suffering from hypothermia.
He was treated by paramedics at the pontoon in Broad Street, Old Portsmouth and then taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital, where he is recovering.
When Mr Chamberlain returned to the terminal ticket office, staff had blankets and warm clothing ready.
He was also taken to hospital but later discharged.
Mr Palmer said: "It was a cold winter's night and I'm sure the man would have died from hypothermia if he had not been spotted by the crew and rescued by Steve."

Man stabbed in Oxford Street 'after fighting off moped thieves'

A man has been stabbed on Oxford Street in central London after he fought back against moped robbers, according to an eyewitness
Emergency services were called to an incident near Oxford Circus tube station at 9.23pm on Sunday after reports of a stabbing.
An eyewitness told the Guardian that she heard loud screams while walking nearby, and saw an altercation between about five people, including a person in a motorbike helmet and passerby who had his mobile phone stolen.
The man who had his phone stolen jumped on the back of the moped, which was circling nearby, and appeared to have been stabbed just before the robbers drove away, the eyewitness said. The man was left holding his chest on the floor, while his friend held him up as they waited for emergency services.
A man in his 20s has been taken to a central London hospital. No arrests have been made in relation to the incident.
Oxford Street was closed between Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road after the incident.
A London ambulance service spokesperson said: “We sent an ambulance crew, two single responders in cars, an incident response officer and London’s air ambulance trauma team in a car.
“We treated a man at the scene and took him as a priority to hospital.”

Homebase owners may close up to 40 stores

Up to 40 Homebase stores could be closed by its Australian owner, putting up to 2,000 jobs at risk.
Wesfarmers paid £340m for the DIY chain in early 2016 and has been rebranding the stores under the Bunnings name.
But after a "disappointing" performance the Australian firm has put Homebase under review and expects it to lose £97m in the first half of 2018.
UK retailers are struggling in the face of rising inflation and fragile consumer confidence.
Several store chains have announced job cuts recently, including supermarket giants Tesco, Sainsbury's and Asda.
Homebase's rival, B&Q, last week said it was cutting 200 jobs at its head office in Hampshire as part of a cost-cutting drive.

Hatton Garden jewellery raider Terry Perkins dies

One of the £14m Hatton Garden jewellery raiders, Terry Perkins, has died in prison aged 69.
Perkins from Enfield, north London, was serving a jail term for the "largest burglary in English legal history".
One of four ringleaders of the 2015 raid, he was last week ordered to pay back £6,526,571 or face a further seven-year jail term.
Perkins and his fellow raiders stole goods after drilling into a vault at London's Hatton Garden Safe Deposit.
He was serving his sentence in HMP Belmarsh and is believed to have been ill for some time.
In a statement, the Prison Service said: "As with all deaths in custody, there will be an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman."

Brexit: Official forecasts suggest economies throughout UK will be hit

Every nation and region of the UK would see slower economic growth as a result of Brexit, according to estimates by government officials.
The forecasts, seen by MPs on Thursday, model the impact of the UK staying in the single market, doing a trade deal with the EU or leaving without a deal.
In each scenario, growth would be lower, by 2%, 5% and 8% respectively compared with current forecasts.
The government says it does not cover all outcomes.
And one Eurosceptic Tory MP said the figures were "complete nonsense".
Following a leak of some of the information to Buzzfeed last week and political pressure to release it, ministers agreed to allow MPs to see the reports on a confidential basis in the House of Commons library.
The forecasts suggest the North-East of England would be worse hit by Brexit, with output falling by 3% if the UK stayed in the single market, 11% under a trade deal and 16% with not trade deal and World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules.
The research suggests London would fare the best, with reductions of 1%, 2% and 2.5% in each of the three scenarios.
Scotland's estimated hit would be 2.5%, 6% and 9%. Wales would see reductions of 1.5%, 5.5% and 9.5%.

No doubt these are "estimates by government officials" who are, in general, remainers.

I also note where it says "The government says it does not cover all outcomes."

I tend to agree with one Eurosceptic Tory MP who said the figures were "complete nonsense"

Who was it who said "there are lies, damned lies and statistics"

Let's face it, can you honestly say WHO is telling the truth and WHO is lying?

As I see things at the moment, the whole issue of leaving the EU has turned out more complicated than anyone ever envisaged when they put their cross on the ballot paper. The joining was complex enough and no doubt the leaving will be even more so.
