Grange Hill's Mrs McClusky actress Gwyneth Powell dies aged 76

Actress Gwyneth Powell, who played head teacher Mrs McClusky in teen soap opera Grange Hill, has died aged 76. The Manchester-born actress loomed over the series for 10 years from 1981, as the stern-but-fair headmistress. She also played Greg Davies' mother Polly in the Channel 4 sitcom Man Down, and appeared in shows like Holby City, A Touch Of Frost and Heartbeat. Her representative Matthew Lacey said Powell had died "of complications following a major operation". He said she "passed away peacefully" with her husband, actor Alan Leith, and niece at her bedside last Thursday. "Gwyneth will be greatly missed by her adoring family and friends along with her many fans from multiple TV appearances," he added. Appropriately, given her most famous role, Powell initially trained as a teacher before throwing herself into repertory theatre in the late 1960s.

Alan Alda and Mike Farrell team up to celebrate 50th anniversary of CBS series M*A*S*H on Twitter

Alan Alda and Mike Farrell teamed up to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the war dark comedy M*A*S*H that premiered on CBS on September 17, 1972. The 86-year-old actor who portrayed Captain Benjamin 'Hawkeye' Pierce on the critically acclaimed show shared a photo on Twitter on Saturday showing him with Farrell, 83, who played Captain B.J. Hunnicutt. 'Mike Farrell and I today toasting the 50th anniversary of the show that changed our lives - and our brilliant pals who made it what it was. MASH was a great gift to us,' Alda wrote as a caption for his roughly 324,000 followers. Alda and Farrell in the photo beamed while standing next to each other holding stemmed glasses filled with red wine.

The ensemble cast originally featured Alda and the late Wayne Rogers, who died in 2015 at age 82, as surgeons Hawkeye and 'Trapper' John McIntyre at the '4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital' in Uijeongbu, South Korea, during the Korean War. Rogers was written out of the after the third season along with the late McLean Stevenson, who died in 1996 at age 68, who portrayed Lieutenant Colonel Henry Blake. Farrell replaced Rogers with Hunnicutt becoming bunkmate and straight-man to Hawkeye's antics.

M*A*S*H was adapted from the 1970 feature film of the same name and aired 11 seasons on CBS from September 1972 until February 28, 1983. The series is one of the highest-rated shows in US television history and its final episode was the most-watched television broadcast in American history from 1983 until 2010. The finale titled 'Goodbye, Farewell and Amen' remains the most-watched finale of an TV series and the most-watched episode of a scripted series.

Sacheen Littlefeather: Native American activist and actor who refused Oscar for Brando dies

Sacheen Littlefeather, the Native American activist who declined Marlon Brando's Oscar for The Godfather on his behalf in 1973, has died aged 75. The actress, who had breast cancer, died on Sunday, the Academy announced. Her death comes two weeks after the organisation honoured her at a ceremony in Los Angeles, publicly apologising for her treatment at the Oscars.

Littlefeather, of Apache and Yaqui heritage, was booed while speaking on stage at the event 50 years ago. Dressed in full Apache attire during the first Oscars to be televised around the world, the Californian, born Maria Cruz, explained on Brando's behalf that he would not accept his best actor gong for the mafia movie in order to protest against the treatment of Native Americans by the film industry and to bring attention to the Wounded Knee protests. In 1973, several hundred locals, together with radical activists from the American Indian Movement (AIM), poured into the nearby village of Wounded Knee in South Dakota to protest government abuse. The protest resulted in a violent stand-off with federal agents that went on for 71 days.

Robbie Coltrane: Harry Potter actor dies aged 72

Actor Robbie Coltrane, who played Hagrid in the Harry Potter films, has died aged 72. He also appeared in ITV detective drama Cracker and the James Bond films Goldeneye and The World Is Not Enough. In a statement, his agent Belinda Wright confirmed the actor died in hospital near Falkirk in Scotland. She described Coltrane as a "unique talent", adding his role as Hagrid "brought joy to children and adults alike all over the world". "For me personally I shall remember him as an abidingly loyal client. As well as being a wonderful actor, he was forensically intelligent, brilliantly witty and after 40 years of being proud to be called his agent, I shall miss him. He is survived by his sister Annie Rae, his children Spencer and Alice and their mother Rhona Gemmell. They would like to thank the medical staff at Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert for their care and diplomacy. "Please respect Robbie's family's privacy at this distressing time."

Coltrane was made an OBE in the 2006 New Year's honours list for his services to drama and he was awarded the Bafta Scotland Award for outstanding contribution to film in 2011. Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe paid tribute to Coltrane in a statement, saying: "Robbie was one of the funniest people I've met and used to keep us laughing constantly as kids on that set. I've especially fond memories of him keeping our spirits up on Prisoner of Azkaban, when we were all hiding from the torrential rain for hours in Hagrid's hut and he was telling stories and cracking jokes to keep morale up. I feel incredibly lucky that I got to meet and work with him and very sad that he's passed. He was an incredible actor and a lovely man." Writing on Twitter, Harry Potter author JK Rowling described Coltrane as an "incredible talent" and "a complete one-off".

Very sad to hear of his passing - seemed quite sudden. I enjoy watching a program series he presents on the Crime and Investigation Channel - "Critical Evidence".

I didn't realise that was just his stage name, although I know that many people in 'the trade' also have different real names.

The Fabs: How a '60s all-girl band (nearly) ruled the world

"You're fabulous, fabulous to be with." So sang 1960s girl group The Fabs of their imagined loves. But in truth, the fabulous ones were the performers on stage. It was a time where not many women played guitar and drums, but band leader Wally "Waldini" Bishop wanted to change that. He formed the quartet who would become The Fabs, whose story is being re-told in the Cardiff Music History: City of Sound exhibition.

One of the four was Sarah Wrigley, nee Johnston, a 19-year-old Cardiff girl whose musician father had taught her to play the guitar. She said Wally Bishop had a show with dancers in Ilfracombe, Devon, but decided in 1963 to form a girl band in a similar vein to the Beatles. Sarah said Wally heard about her through her father and got the other girls, who did not play instruments, the gear and lessons they needed. Sarah said the quartet - her on lead guitar, Linda Mazey from Barry on drums, Margaret Lewis from Bedwas on bass guitar, and Newport's Maria Kitsom on rhythm guitar - were a bit of a "novelty" for those watching them in the summer of 1964. "We did three or four numbers of the day which only required three or four chords… and we were very popular with the audiences."

After the season, an offer came for a contract to perform for US bases in Germany for American GIs. Sarah said the band all had "good figures" and wore "all the gear all the time". "The guys absolutely loved us," she added. "It didn't really matter what we sounded like, to be perfectly honest, however I have to say after four months of playing six nights a week four hours a night, we did rapidly improve." This led to the group going back and forth to Germany as well as playing clubs in south Wales. But the band faced disparaging jokes made by boy bands they performed alongside, including from a future rock star. "We worked with The Who at one point. Roger Daltrey said to me as I came off stage from our spot, 'you're quite good, love, but you won't get anywhere' as pop groups were 'all boys'." She said the band knew they were a "novelty", but also knew they had become good at playing and said they were not put off by Daltrey's comments.

After a year, Wally Bishop died. It did not stop The Fabs. Sarah said: "We'd been back and forth to Germany quite a bit, and we could drive, we could look after ourselves, we kind of knew our way around. So we decided to carry on by ourselves." Sarah said the group, despite being young and female, were treated well, were well paid and "having a great time". The group performed covers of popular songs, but Sarah did write "a few ditties", including their theme tune You're Fabulous. "We could throw [them] into the show so weren't doing totally all covers. We didn't worry about learning new songs all the time. "Linda used to do a drum solo which used to raise the roof and they absolutely loved her doing that." The women also found the attitude abroad towards them quite different, facing less sexism when they travelled to Spain, the Azores and Turkey, proving popular wherever they went.

'Top secret': Ed Sheeran spotted filming on beach

Fans of Ed Sheeran were in for a treat as the Suffolk superstar was spotted filming in a "top secret" location. The global star was seen "shooting a music video" on north Lowestoft beach on Wednesday, November 2. In a video post on Instagram on Wednesday, the singer-songwriter said: "So Shivers has just hit a billion streams on Spotify, which makes it my 11th song as an artist and 15th song as a writer, I am over the moon about it. Thank you everyone that has been streaming that song. I am going to celebrate by shooting a music video for my brand new album that will be out next year."

The world famous artist - who moved to Framlingham as a youngster and continues to live near the east Suffolk town - was seen in north Lowestoft on Wednesday morning. By about 10.30am, the music video was being filmed close to the groynes and dunes near the Gunton Warren Nature Reserve in Lowestoft. The Bad Habits singer was spotted sitting on a piece of driftwood, surrounded by a production crew, security and extras for the filming - against the backdrop of early morning dog walkers and a handful of people. Production crews were said to have arrived on Gunton Cliff, Lowestoft, at around 5pm the day before - with speculation that filming for his next single had also taken place on Tuesday close to Southwold Pier.

Leslie Phillips: Carry On and Harry Potter star dies aged 98

Actor Leslie Phillips, who was known for appearing in the Carry On films, has died aged 98 after a long illness. Phillips was also familiar to younger fans as the voice of the Sorting Hat in Harry Potter films. His wife Zara told the Sun: "I've lost a wonderful husband and the public has lost a truly great showman. "He was quite simply a national treasure. People loved him. He was mobbed everywhere he went." Phillips' agent Jonathan Lloyd confirmed the star died peacefully in his sleep on Monday. The comic actor starred in more than 200 films, TV and radio series over his eight-decade career. He was known for catchphrases such as "Ding dong" - a reference to the name of his character Jack Bell in 1959's Carry on Nurse - "I say" and "Well, hello", which he delivered with suggestive intonation.

Royal Opera House bans audience member for heckling child actor

The Royal Opera House has banned an audience member for life for booing and heckling a 12-year-old actor during a production of Handel's opera Alcina. Malakai M Bayoh was met with cries of "Rubbish!" while singing his lines, on Tuesday, opening night, in London. Onlookers shushed the heckler, who left soon after, and loudly applauded Bayoh. The ROH said it was "appalled" at the outburst and praised the classically trained youngster for his well reviewed portrayal of Oberto.

In a statement shared with BBC News, a spokesman said: "Malakai is astonishingly talented, bringing great acting and beautiful singing to the role - a huge accomplishment for such a young singer. Unfortunately, the opening night of Alcina featured an audience member who disrupted the show and Malakai's excellent performance. We are appalled that a member of the audience behaved in this way and our support is with Malakai and the cast and creative team of Alcina. Steps have been taken to ensure the audience member in question does not return to the Royal Opera House."

Neighbours: Amazon to revive TV soap, four months after finale

Amazon has announced it is reviving Australian TV soap Neighbours, less than four months after its much-publicised final episode. The show will resume filming next year and will then be available in the UK and US on Amazon Freevee, the company's free streaming service. Neighbours is "a unique series with a powerful connection with its fans across the world", Amazon said. Those fans had thought it was over when its star-studded finale aired in July.

Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Guy Pearce were among the old favourites who returned for what was thought to be the last episode, in which all the houses on Ramsay Street were up for sale. But Stefan Dennis (Paul Robinson), Alan Fletcher (Karl Kennedy), Jackie Woodburne (Susan Kennedy) and Ryan Moloney (Toadfish Rebecchi) will be among the cast members returning to the Melbourne street for the new series. Fletcher said it was "incredible news" and Donovan said he was "thrilled".

Christine McVie, Fleetwood Mac singer-songwriter, dies aged 79

Christine McVie, who played with Fleetwood Mac and wrote some of their most famous songs, has died aged 79, her family has said. The British singer-songwriter was behind hits including Little Lies, Everywhere, Don't Stop, Say You Love Me, and Songbird. She died peacefully at a hospital in the company of her family, a statement said. McVie left Fleetwood Mac after 28 years in 1998 but returned in 2014. The family's statement said "we would like everyone to keep Christine in their hearts and remember the life of an incredible human being, and revered musician who was loved universally".

Born Christine Perfect, McVie married Fleetwood Mac bassist John McVie and joined the group in 1971. Fleetwood Mac was one of the world's best known rock bands in the 1970s and '80s. Their 1977 album Rumours - inspired by the break-ups of the McVies and the band's other couple, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks - became one of the biggest selling of all time, with more than 40 million copies sold worldwide. McVie was one of eight members of the band inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.

Ruth Madoc: Hi-de-Hi! actress dies aged 79

Actress Ruth Madoc, who starred in the BBC sitcom Hi-de-Hi!, has died aged 79, her agent says. Her agent said she died in hospital on Friday afternoon after surgery for a fall she had earlier in the week. Phil Belfield of talent agency Belfield & Ward Ltd described her as a "unique talent loved by many". He paid tribute to her "iconic" TV performance as Gladys Pugh in the 1980s comedy Hi-de-Hi!, about a holiday camp in the late 50s. "It is with much sadness that we have to announce the death of our dear and much loved client Ruth Madoc," he said in a statement. Describing her as a "real legend of the British entertainment scene", Mr Belfield said she was "gone far too soon". Her fall forced her to withdraw from performing in the pantomime Aladdin at the Princess Theatre in Torquay, Devon.
