Not sure where shop opening times fit into the equation either.

We still have family get togethers but not as often as we would like, probably due to there being so many of us now (with spouses and kids etc) and we are very well spread across the country and abroad.

I used to work in the convenience grocery business and all our shops opened on Boxing day and we began opening on Christmas Day with volunteer staff. You have to bear in mind that a lot of people don't like Christmas and would prefer to work or be somewhere they can meet people. For many others, especially in the Manchester area, don't recognise our Christmas anyway. An average convenience store probably has 12 to 20 part-time employees but it only requires a handful to run the shop on short hours.
It's grim up North...
