Including URL links within posts.

Post by boatbuilder » Wed Sep 28, 2016 9:37 pm

When posting URL's within posts you should only use the BBCode if you intend to have your link appear as user defined text as indicated near the end of this post.

If you use this code to enclose just a URL, lengthy URL's such as those which are often used in some newspaper websites, have a tendency to spill over outside of the page on certain devices as the full length of the URL is displayed within the post.
By posting the URL by itself without the BBCode, the system software truncates the URL and a shorter version appears within the post as here:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/201 ... -wants-an/

The same URL enclosed by itself between the middle brackets ][ of the code as indicated here:
"http://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/20 ... wants-an/"
will display as follows:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/201 ... -wants-an/

When using the BBCode, this should only be used as follows, using the user defined text - NEWS STORY - as an example:
NEWS STORY
You should make sure you include an equals = immediately after the first [url followed by the full URL address before the first closing bracket ]

Please note that in the above examples I have used inverted commas " immediately before and after the URL used so it would appear in this post as I wanted it to. They should therefore not be used in the normal course of events.

Without the inverted commas, the final example above appears in the post as follows:

NEWS STORY

The words 'NEWS STORY' used in this example can be any text you wish.

Some URL's can be much longer than the one used here and can be the equivalent of several lines of text, hence the reason for not using this particular BBCode unless for the purpose illustrated.
