Warning: Tidal Flow in Operation

Post by LorraineG » Fri Apr 07, 2017 7:42 pm

Can anyone tell me what the signs in Lowestoft mean that say
WARNING: Tidal Flow in Operation
They are on the road heading towards the Bascule Bridge and have been there for 2-3 days.

It may mean that because Oulton Broad is now open both ways with the roadworks there now finished, the original 'tidal flow' times of the traffic over the bascule bridge are now back in operation with the northbound flow now reverting to the one lane over the bridge late morning instead of 8-pm in the evening which was the case during the OB roadworks. If I'm wrong then no doubt somebody will know the correct answer.

You are correct BB the term tidal flow does indeed refer to the traffic direction ie it will have 2 lanes in one direction for a set time and then the opposite 2 lanes in the other direction when that time has been reached, being we only have the three lanes on our "Bridge!" it is the best way to aid traffic flow over it as the enter or leave Lowestoft traffic changes directions.
The challenge is not to manage time, but to manage ourselves.

As I recall, most people told the powers that be that a three lane bridge would present these problems in the late 60's. I guess we just didn't know at that time that the bridge was bought second hand from the Netherlands and was already built that way.

I think you will find that the bridge was 2 lanes when it was first installed. It was later changed to 3 lanes.

Should have been four from the outset. They must have been wide lanes or wide paths if it was only two lanes to begin with.

I recall everybody saying it wouldn't be wide enough and the council saying it would but I can't remember it starting with two lanes.

Off coarse you are all right about the tidal flow but could;t it have been better phrased like traffic flow.
by the way can we ask the authorities to dig up oulton broad again because I found it so much quicker.
