Latest post of the previous page:

So I’m guessing that it might not be where the current Lord Nelson pub is, on Bevan Street West? I did wonder, as it doesn’t seem to fit in with the surroundings there today.

Unless there were two with the same name in those days or the current one was renamed sometime after that one may have met it’s demise.

Looking more closely at the left side, magnifying the image, it certainly looks as though it could be where you say, kerch, and I just noticed another danger sign - sideways on between two of the fence ‘planks’ to the right of the door.

I wonder if the picture was taken as a momento for the ‘locals’ (those in the picture) before it finally met its doom.

Pakefield was a village then and probably had pubs the same name as Lowestoft ones. :D

Probably, yes. Long before my time here (c.1990) and possibly yours, no doubt. There are (or were) until fairly recently two 'The Crown' pubs. The one on the High Street and the one we still have in Carlton Colville. At one time if you said you went to 'The Crown' you had to say which one to differentiate. :D

I was born in Lowestoft and can remember the floods 1952 and some of the cliffs were washed away then and after that the sea recided to more or less how it is today.

The first photo is an eBay postcard and had the information 'Funfair, Preston Road Lowestoft 1931'. I can't find Preston Road on Google Maps so I'm guessing it doesn't exist anymore, any ideas welcome, please. Second up is 'Bakers Score, Corton looking south along The Street and Church Lane which would be to the extreme right other side of the bushes. c.1903', thanks to Russell Walker.

A brace from Russell Walker, the first is 'Who recalls the Mutford Crossings Inn? Church Road (corner of Beccles Road), Mutford. Converted into a residence 'The Crossings'. Photo is pre-WWI.' Then 'Oulton Broad with a Trading Wherry next to the aptly named Wherry Quay and Swonnells Maltings in the background. The Wherry Hotel is to the extreme right out of shot. Early-to-mid 1900s.'

Two from Russell Walker/Facebook.
1/ The double Swing Bridge and Lock Gate at Lowestoft which opened in 1830. Commercial Road to the left and trees where Station Square and London Road North will be are a part of the Grove Estate. The bridge-keeper's house in the foreground right with the Icehouse behind it. Photo was taken 1880s/early 1890s at a guess.
'First bridge was a double swing bridge and originally opened with tidal flood gates that gradually eroded with Teredo worm and failed, making fresh-water Lake Lothing into a salt-water estuary. There are accounts of thousands of freshwater fish dying and floating on the surface when this happened.'

2/ Victorian photo of Lowestoft Inner Harbour / Lake Lothing. 1890s at a guess.

Russell Walker supplies both photos this time. First is 'Splendid shot of the Swing Bridge at Lowestoft with the Royal Norfolk & Suffolk Yacht Club and the Royal Hotel prominent in the background. 1950s'. Next is The Street, Corton, 1908-1910'.

'Station Square and Tuttles Corner at Lowestoft as Sentinel Y1 0-4-0T No.38 is light engine heading towards the dockside next to Waveney Road. Notice the man carrying the flag in front. The policeman directing traffic and the Suffolk Hotel are notable also in the photo. Photo was taken in 1954.' Thanks to Russell Walker/Facebook for the photo and information.

'Corton a Suffolk costal village in Lowestoft, c1910' comes from eBay.

Two Russell Walker photos again.

1/ 'Interesting view of Lowestoft Harbour 2 or 3 Steam Fishing Drifters (PD356 "Endeavour" berthed to the left) and 5 Fishing Smacks, 2 of which are being towed out to the open sea by a Steam Paddle Tug. 1907-1914 at a guess.'

2/ 'Good example of when St. Margaret's Church, North Lowestoft and the surrounding area were still in the countryside and before urbanisation. Viewed from the south and where the Yarmouth-Lowestoft line would scythe through in 1902/03. Rotterdam Road would be to the right out of shot and the far building in-between the two trees to the left could be part of Church Farm. 1880s/1890s I think.'
