Re: Lowestoft and Surrounding Area.
I have no other information, boatbuilder, perhaps someone else can help identify them.boatbuilder wrote: ↑Sat Jul 11, 2020 4:16 pmI am wondering which 'Lock Gates' that is? Is it Mutford?
Edit: I've just spotted the same postcard amongst all the others and it has 'Oulton Broad Lowestoft 1933'.

Re: Lowestoft and Surrounding Area.
Both postcards and information are from Russell Walker/Facebook.
1/ Edwardian Marine Parade, Lowestoft. Note the Great Eastern Railway Company Ltd (GER) 20 hp Milnes-Daimler motor bus which operated a round trip service from Lowestoft to Southwold 1904-1914.
2/ Quaint Victorian shot of the double Swing Bridge and Lock Gate (below the 'keep to the right' sign) at Lowestoft. The Harbour Hotel (centre), the Royal Hotel (left) and the steeple of St. John's Church (top right) make up an impressive background. 1880s/1890s (before 1897). Further information about the bridge as follows:
'First bridge was a double swing bridge and originally opened with tidal flood gates that gradually eroded with Tirado worm and failed, making fresh-water Lake Lothing into a salt-water estuary. There are accounts of thousands of freshwater fish dying and floating on the surface when this happened.' (Thank you to Christopher Brooks). Bridge details (Thank you to Ivan Bunn for posting this): Brickwork contractors for lock pits: Messrs Wright & Cattermoul of Norwich.' Stonework by Wade of Kirkstall, Leeds. Lock gates built by Jabez Bailey, shipbuilder of Ipswich. Cast iron double-leaf swing bridge constructed and erected by John Seaward & Co., Canal Ironworks, Limehouse. London. 102 feet long, weight 240 tons, opening arch 52 feet. Opened 9 June 1830.

Re: Lowestoft and Surrounding Area.
Both photos and information supplied by Russell Walker/Facebook.
1/ Taken from Yarmouth Road bridge and looking at Lowestoft North Railway Station, a 2-car Met-Cam (later Class 101) DMU departs the station as it nears the end of its journey and heads south towards Lowestoft Central, ex. Yarmouth Southtown. Good to see a Swallow Prams lorry to the left. The Yarmouth-Lowestoft line became single track from late 1967 and officially closed on 4th May 1970. Photo was taken in 1968 at a guess.
2/ Fine photo of White House Farm, Hall Road, Hopton. Pre-WWI

Re: Lowestoft and Surrounding Area.
1/ Dene and North Parade, Lowestoft, 1911. Thanks to eBay.
2/ The Great Eastern Hotel. 1916 or before. The Great Eastern Hotel, 78 Denmark Road (corner of Flensburgh Street), Lowestoft, which is now known as the Great Eastern Warehouse and occupied by Karl Bowler Removals & Storage. The hotel was named after Isambard Kingdom Brunel's SS Great Eastern which had her maiden voyage in September 1859, so the hotel first opened from this time onwards although the earliest I can find is 1871. I am unsure when the Great Eastern closed although it was still trading in 1976. Thanks to Russell Walker/Facebook.

1/Thanks go to Russell Walker/Facebook for the first photo. 'The Zebra Crossing at the junction of the High Street and St. Peter's Street, Lowestoft, adjacent to the 'Plain' Triangle Market. The Golden Fish wet fish shop, W Taylor Antiques shop and Gooch Motors to the right. I think the cars are a Morris Marina, Hillman Imp and MGB GT. Photo was taken during May 1977.'
2/'Lowestoft-Bathing Pool Oulton Broad Suffolk' is an eBay postcard, no date unfortunately.
