January 4th West Ham United joint chairman David Gold has died at the age of 86 following a short illness. A lifelong Hammers fan, Mr Gold was born in east London in 1936 and raised in a house on Green Street - directly opposite the club's former stadium, the Boleyn Ground.

January 5th Australia helicopter crash: A recently married couple from Neston in Cheshire were killed, just days into a post-Covid visit to see family.
January 6th. Chelsea have led the tributes to their former player and manager Gianluca Vialli after his death at the age of 58. Vialli, who joined Chelsea in 1996 and helped them win the FA Cup at the end of his first season before guiding the London club to glory in both the League Cup and Uefa Cup Winners’ Cup as player-manager the following season, had been undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer.

January 9th : The first ever orbital space launch from British soil is getting ready to blast off. Monday's mission will see a repurposed 747 jumbo jet release a rocket over the Atlantic to take nine satellites high above the Earth. Newquay Airport in Cornwall is the starting point for the operation, on Monday evening after 2100 GMT.

January 14th. FIFA has announced that it is launching an investigation into the actions of the Argentina side after they beat France on penalties to win the 2022 World Cup final. The global governing body has 'opened proceedings' against the Albiceleste for potentially violating several clauses of the FIFA disciplinary code during and after the showpiece event, namely clauses for fairplay and player misconduct.
